- You’ll never be fully ready
You’ll never be fully ready
Why waiting until you “feel ready” can quietly hold your career back.
Hey friend,
At some point in your career, you’ve probably told yourself: “I’ll go for it once I’m ready.”
Ready for the promotion.
Ready to change industries.
Ready to finally ask for the raise.
And it feels rational…. responsible even. Why rush into something you might not be prepared for? I’ve been there countless times.
I’ve had moments where I hesitated, and someone else stepped up first. Later, I caught myself thinking: “I could have done that.”
One thing I’ve realized, and I think you’ll resonate with this too, is that you’ll never feel 100% ready.
I’ve coached people who checked every single box in the job description - and they still hesitated. I’ve seen people stall for years, waiting for “perfect timing” that never showed up.
And in the meantime?
Someone else put their hand up first. Someone else took the role. Someone else moved forward.
Readiness is rarely the issue. It’s comfort. It’s fear of being seen. It’s waiting for certainty in a world where certainty doesn’t exist.
The people who grow are the ones who didn’t feel fully ready but decided to move anyway.
So the next time you find yourself hesitating, ask:
What’s the smallest step I can take toward this goal today, even if I don’t feel ready?
I used to think I had to wait for the right moment. But most of the progress in my career came when I jumped before I felt ready.
Decide. Take a step. Even if it’s messy, even if you’re not 100% sure.
Have a great week ahead.
