When ‘fine’ isn’t enough at work
You don’t have to hate your job to know it’s time to grow
Sometimes, a job doesn’t turn bad, it just gets smaller.
You show up, do the work, and everything is… fine.
The people are fine.
The pay is fine.
Even your manager is fine.
But you can feel it: something’s missing.
There are a few subtle signs that you’ve outgrown your role.
The first is when work that used to excite you now feels routine. The projects that once gave you energy are just boxes to check. You’re still performing, but there’s no spark.
The second is when you’re solving the same problems over and over, almost on autopilot. It’s comfortable, but not challenging. Growth happens when you stretch into the unfamiliar, and lately, there hasn’t been much of that.
And the third is when the growth you want is outside your current team or title. You’re bumping into invisible walls. You can see where you want to go, but you’re not sure you can get there from here.
If any of this feels familiar, it doesn’t mean you’re ungrateful. It means you’re ready.
Ready for what comes next - not necessarily to quit tomorrow or make a dramatic move. Just ready for the next season of your career, whatever that might look like.
If you’re feeling that nudge, start small. Update your LinkedIn profile. Reach out to one person whose career path you admire. Take half an hour to explore roles or companies that spark curiosity.
Tiny steps are how you go from “fine” to fulfilled.
Have you ever felt this shift, that quiet sense that your role is just too small now?
Hit reply and tell me. I’d love to hear your story.
See you next week.
