Success envy is real

What to do when your peers move faster than you

Hi Friend,

No one likes to admit it out loud, but I’ve heard this whispered more times than I can count:

“It feels like everyone else is moving faster than me.”

A peer lands a bigger title.
Someone younger gets promoted.
A friend posts about their new role, and the likes pile up.

And suddenly, you start questioning yourself.
“Did I waste time? Am I behind? Am I not good enough?”

That feeling has a name: success envy.

Here’s the truth, career timelines aren’t equal. They never have been.

Some people get lucky with a manager who champions them.
Some land in a high-growth company at the right time.
Some hit industries that are booming while others are shrinking.

It’s not all merit. It’s not all hustle. Timing, luck, and bias play a bigger role than most people admit.

So what do you do when envy creeps in?

  1. Acknowledge it. Pretending you’re not affected just makes the feeling heavier.

  2. Reframe it. Their win doesn’t erase your path. It just shows what’s possible.

  3. Refocus. Ask: What’s one step that matters for my career right now? Not theirs. Yours.

Because here’s the thing: envy isn’t a signal that you’re behind.
It’s a signal that you still care.
That there’s more you want.

And that’s not weakness. It can actually be a great source of fuel…. if you use it.
